KARAGÖZ AND HACİVAT
Karagoz and Hacivat
The shadow play that continues its Turkish-Ottoman
tradition; After a curtain, the puppets that are shaped by painting are made to
speak with the help of light. It is a tradition that people made in the Ottoman
times to make people laugh and have fun at night. Karagöz and Hacivat come to
mind when it comes to shadow play, which still has an important place today.
Although it is not clear where the Karagöz and Hacivat duo is derived from,
there are many rumors that say they are real people. The most common of these
is that there are workers working in the construction of Bursa Ulu Mosque.
According to the legend, in the 14th century, Orhan Gazi took Bursa and ordered
a mosque to be built there. Karagöz is a blacksmith who lives in Thrace. Bursa
immigrated here after being taken. He starts to work as a blacksmith of Bursa
Ulu Mosque, whose construction started. Hacivat works as a bricklayer here.
While the construction of the mosque continues, humorous clashes start between
Karagöz and Hacivat. Karagöz was not educated, he learned by watching his work
and working alongside his masters. He is a ready-made answer, quick-witted and
constantly getting into trouble. Hacivat, on the other hand, was educated in
the madrasa, was knowledgeable and good manners. Hacivat always rescues Karagöz
from the troubles he gets into, and this always causes a fight between them.
After a while, these bickering becomes so funny that other workers leave their
jobs and start watching them. Of course, this causes the construction to slow
down and the work to be delayed. As a result, the sultan, who was angry with
the delay of the construction of the Grand Mosque, had them executed. The
people are very upset about this situation and they want not to forget Hacivat
and Karagöz in theaters in order not to forget their jokes, and thus, karagöz
theaters emerge.
